SOCIAL DISTANCING INTERVIEWS
Due by 11:59pm Sunday, November 29th
Worth 60 points
Sociology focuses on social behavior and interactions, which is drastically transformed right now. Since we are currently socially distanced from each other, in place of the observation assignment we will do something safer, and relevant to the current situation. This pandemic has affected us all, and the ways in which we interact have suddenly changed in many ways.
You will interview two people about changes that have occurred with social interactions during this pandemic. You can interview people in your household, and/or you can interview people on the phone, or online through a platform such as Zoom, Skype, Face Time, etc. One suggestion is you can interview your classmates online. You can connect with each other through the discussion board on Canvas or during our scheduled online chats.
Your interviews will focus on different types of interactions, including those in intimate relationships (such as family, significant others, and close friends). You will also ask about interactions with casual acquaintances (such as classmates, professors, coworkers, etc.), and interactions with strangers. You can ask about interactions that occur face-to-face, as well as online and on the telephone.
Below is a list of questions you can ask, if applicable to the interviewee. Each one of these questions should lead to a page-worth of information, so these questions should not lead to short answers. You can also come up with additional questions of your own.
How have your intimate relationships (family, significant other, close friendships) been affected?
How has your social life with casual relationships been affected (classmates, coworkers, casual friends, and dating)?
How have your interactions changed with strangers? For example, at the grocery store, or other essential places of service, on the phone, email, etc.
Overall, to what extent do you feel that youre social distanced?
You will then write a 4-5 page paper, in paragraph form, explaining the findings from your interviews. You will label interview findings with at least 10 sociological concepts from the textbook. You will expand on explanations of the course ideas as they apply your interview findings.
I expect you to use specific sociological terms and theoretical concepts from the textbook. By the time this assignment is due you will have read many chapters and have had lectures on them. I expect that you will be able to section out specific examples of different sociological phenomena and label it appropriately.
The following is the format in which the project will be organized:
You should apply at least 10 course concepts that relate to your observation.
You should apply SPECIFIC sociological terms and theoretical concepts, which should be typed in bold font or underlined. By the time this assignment is due you will have read many chapters. I expect that you will be able to section out specific examples of different sociological phenomena and label it appropriately. I also expect you to expand on explanations of each sociological concept. Explanations of course concepts must be in your own words.
IMPORTANT: Answers must be completely in your own words. Do not copy definitions from the textbook or other source to explain the course concepts. Points will be deducted if explanations are copied from the textbook or other sources.
Completed papers should be 4-5 pages (not including your interview questions), typed in black ink, 12-point font, double-spaced, with 1 margins. This paper must be written in a standard academic font (Times New Roman, Arial, or Cambria).
Pages must be numbered
Organize ideas in separate paragraphs.
Grammar, spelling, and format are important. Be sure to use your spell/grammar check and proof read your work. Proper spelling & grammar are important indicators of a well-prepared paper. Excessive errors will result in a reduction of points. Suggestion: It always helps to have a second pair of eyes view your work. You may want to have another person read your paper prior to turning it in. Excessive spelling/grammatical errors will result in a reduction of points.
Late papers will not be accepted. No exceptions!
Any deviations from this format will result in points being deducted from the assignment grade.
Your grade will be determined by how successful you are in following the specified instructions, and especially in addressing and expanding upon each of the sociological concepts. Show me that you understand the course material.
